Released in 1977, _Rumours_ by Fleetwood Mac remains one of the most timeless and iconic albums ever released. Recorded in the midst of failing relationships, heavy drug use, and sheer emotional strain, the 11-song album was a smash hit then and now, collecting multiple accolades, awards, and top positions on the charts. The 11th studio album recorded by Fleetwood Mac,_ Rumours _combines a unique blend of upbeat pop, melancholic prose, and heartfelt folk. The songs on the album are masterfully interwoven together creating a musical experience that is enthralling to listeners. Known today as Fleetwood Mac’s magnum opus, _Rumors_ lays down a timeless sound, with deep lyrics carrying universal messages that continue to captivate listeners decades after its release.

There were many iterations of Fleetwood Mac in the band’s 50 years together. But the iconic quintet of Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, and John McVie, the bandmembers responsible for composing _Rumors_, will always be the names associated with the group. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were newer additions who on _Rumours_ were recording their second album with the group. On the album, they joined preexisting members Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, and John McVie. Nicks and Buckingham, perhaps the most popular members of Fleetwood Mac, had known each other since they were sixteen. The two were involved in a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship, fueled by the band’s cocaine use, that was in the process of coming to an end during the recording of _Rumours_. The raw emotion of the Nicks – Buckingham breakup is preserved in the sounds and lyrics of _Rumours; _this emotion arguably one of the biggest reasons for the album’s indelible success. Two of the most famous songs from the album, and two of the greatest songs of all time, Stevie Nicks’ “Dreams” and Lindsey Buckingham's “Go Your Own Way” directly address the strife in their relationship. In the 2021 list of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, “Dreams” is 9/500 and “Go Your Own Way” is 401/500.

At the same time, during the recording _Rumours_, Christine McVie and John McVie were going through a divorce, ending eight years of marriage. As their marriage was ending, Christine McVie began an affair with the band’s lighting director, Curry Grant. The ordeal inspired her to write the song “You Make Loving Fun,” one of the top songs on the album. While all this was going on, Mick Fleetwood was involved a divorce of his own after he found his wife had been cheating on him with his best friend. The turmoil of the group’s personal lives really translates through the album’s sound and lyrics. The visceral emotion of the group’s personal struggles is ever present in the album and a large part of the reason _Rumours_ remains a record generations revel in.

_Rumours _is one of the top ten best-selling albums of all time. 21x Platinum, the album has sold 45 million copies worldwide and helped Fleetwood Mac build an international fan group of all ages. The album won the band's only Grammy Award in 1978 in the prestigious Album of the Year category, beating out artists like James Taylor and John Williams. Its best-known single, “Dreams”, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released. The album spent 31 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 between 1977-1978. It also continues to top the best-selling vinyl sales charts, frequently seen in the top 10.

A testament to their impact, both _Rumours_ and Fleetwood Mac remain prominent in pop culture today through mediums like social media, books, and television almost half a century since the release of the classic album. Multiple viral TikTok trends involving the band’s songs, and the book/series “Daisy Jones and the Six” have helped the album to once again climb the music charts and bring their music to a whole new generation of listeners.

Almost 50 years after it release, the era-defining album continues to sit high on the Billboard 200 list alongside the most popular contemporary albums. Its permanence in mainstream culture comes as no surprise, its combination of chaos and craftsmanship make it a timeless classic. The unique history in the creation of the album, its themes of real, human experiences of loss and struggle, and its artists who were able to put aside their differences to collaborate together is why the album has been so impactful and remained relevant for so many years. Out of all the personal turmoil: the drugs, pain, betrayal, and jealousy came a masterpiece. _Rumours_ is not just an album that took the world by storm in the 1970s, but one that lives on, growing and deepening with time.
